Why is Isotonic Vitaler’s salty?

An isotonic drink is one that has a similar concentration of molecules (i.e. osmolality) to our body fluids — such as blood. This allows the body to absorb it easily and quickly, which is particularly important in cases of dehydration, physical exertion or hot weather.

To create such a drink, dissolved substances that increase osmolality must be added to the water. Glucose and salt (sodium chloride) are usually used for this purpose.

But what if we want a sugar-free drink?

Since glucose cannot be used, the correct concentration must be achieved in another way — and then the only solution is to add more salt. And salt, as we know, tastes salty. That is precisely why a sugar-free isotonic drink must be salty — not for the taste, but so that it works as it should.
