What is oregano?

Oregano, also known as 'wild marjoram', is well known as a spice. The leaves of this plant are used in cooking. When crushed, they have an aromatic, peppery slightly bitter taste. They are added to many dishes, both meat (e.g. poultry, veal, fish) and vegetarian, both in Poland and around the world. Oregano makes an excellent combination with tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, aubergines, parsley, garlic and beans. It goes well with dishes containing eggs and cheese. It is a great flavour enhancer in soups, stews, sauces and many dishes. It is also used to enhance the aroma of olive oil and even spirits - some vodkas and liqueurs.

Health benefits of oregano:

Oregano contains a high dose of phenolic compounds, which prevent carcinogenic processes by removing excess free radicals. Oregano also has a supportive effect in the prevention of diabetes and heart disease. In natural medicine, it is known as an expectorant and a soothing remedy for respiratory tract infections.
