Description
L-ascorbic acid is a chemical compound with the sum formula C6H8O6, formed naturally by the fermentation of glucose, and is in the form of a white powder with an acidic taste. It is commonly known as vitamin C. The properties of ascorbic acid are used not only in medicine, but also in cosmetics (when making home-based cosmetics - creams, serums, masks).
L-ascorbic acid - uses
Ascorbic acid is a strong antioxidant. When used in the cosmetics industry, it is used as an additive in creams and lotions, as it reduces the effects of free radicals. As vitamin C (in the form of l-ascorbic acid), it is used in the production of dietary supplements and medicines.
Because of its reducing and antioxidant properties, ascorbic acid is commonly used as a food additive. Antioxidants in foods are substances that extend the shelf life of foods by inhibiting oxidation reactions. They prevent adverse chemical changes in food groups such as fats, fruit and vegetables and their preparations, among others. In addition, it effectively inhibits the formation of toxic nitrosamines in cured meats, as well as stabilising the colour of meat.
L-ascorbic acid is sometimes used to discolour pool water, as a pH regulator of the water. Due to its iron assimilation properties, l-ascorbic acid reduces iron ions, which are responsible for the greenish colour of pool water.
Ascorbic acid is also used for the colouring of pool water.
L-ascorbic acid - role in the body
Vitamin C is very biologically active. It is involved in many extremely important reactions and transformations, stimulating various biochemical processes in the body. Due to vitamin C's very good solubility and active transport, it is absorbed by the body in approx. 70-80%.
Vitamin C is a highly biologically active molecule with many functions in the body:
- Helps protect cells from oxidative stress
- Helps in the proper production of collagen to ensure the proper functioning of the blood vessels
- Increases the absorption of iron
- Helps with the normal functioning of the nervous system
- Contributes to the maintenance of normal energy metabolism
- Helps maintain mental well-being
